Sisters and Brothers at GKN,
Early this morning, I called GKN to inform them of your decision to reject the contract offer and the authorization of strike actions. When I asked the Company to return to the Bargaining Table to iron out the issues brought forth at the Ratification Vote, the Company said they would get back to me “shortly”.
As of 5:00 PM, January 12, 2009, they have not returned their answer. Per the collective voice of the membership and the current contract, if the company does not call and schedule a meeting “shortly”, I will issue the 7-day letter of our intent to strike.
I understand all the managers were called into a meeting today and extra security is being manned throughout the Plant. I have heard HR Reps and managers are walking through the plant trying to figure out where they missed the mark on what you expect.
I encourage each of you to respectfully tell them where they missed the mark and that, unless they return to the Bargaining Table “soon”, you will be walking the line.
A lot of rumors are flying around. That is to be expected. I would ask you to talk to your Shop Steward to get the facts on any issue before you take what is being said at face value.
You have spoken at the ballot box and your voice is loud and clear. Your Bargaining Committee remains ready to re-enter negotiations to bring back a contract that gives you the respect you deserve.
I will keep you informed of the status as events unfold.
Fraternally,
Gordon King
