Roger Smith
Boeing Plant Chairman
I have been a member of the IAMAW for 21 years and am proud of Union I represent. I am currently the Boeing Plant Chairman for second and third shift employees in all Boeing buildings. In my 21 years with District 837, I have served in a variety of positions. Currently, I am serving the members of Local Lodge 837 A as the Recording Secretary.
For the District, I am Co-Chairman of the Political Action Committee. This Committee has been very active in educating the workforce on workingmen and workingwomen’s issues. The PAC is also active in educating our politicians on what it takes to keep the members of District 837 on the job and not on the street. Every year, Congress battles out the budgeting for the following years. Our job is to ensure that the products built by GKN and Boeing Union members receives funding to the greatest extent possible. The PAC is also responsible for educating the membership on important issues for legislation and carrying the voice of the people into the political arena at State and Federal levels to promotes changes need for working Americans.
As a Plant Chairman, my #1 priority is to enforce the language of the Contract. Many times this is a very difficult task with the management we have at Boeing. I find that communication with the membership and with management is a key to solving most situations. When I find management resistant to correcting contract violations, I elevate the grievance and continue in the investigation needed for the member to successfully win the case. I encourage each and every member to contact me with any work related problems that he or she is experiencing as soon as possible.
I also feel that accurate information pertaining to your job, your contractual rights, and your status, as an IAM member can be extremely helpful to you in the workplace. Please do not hesitate to call me to ask for information that I may be able to provide. If I don’t have the information readily available, I will either get it from the appropriate source for you or direct you to the appropriate source.
The Steward is usually your first stop in correcting situations in the workplace and I work closely with each Steward to fixing the problems that they need help with. Here is a list of second and third shift Shop Stewards for your use.
